Sciatic Nerve Pain
What is it? The pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, down your lower back to the legs. Typically, it only affects one side of your body.
What is it caused by? A slipped disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and a back injury.
What are the symptoms? Your bottom, backs of your legs, feet and toes may feel painful, tingling, numb and weak.
How do I manage it? Gentle exercises to maintain movement. Massage therapy.
Piriformis
What is it? An uncommon cause of pain in the glutes, lower back and can radiate down the leg to the foot.
What is it caused by? Due to compression or contraction of the piriformis muscle on certain areas of the sciatic nerve.
What are the symptoms? Pain, tingling and numbness.
How do I manage it? Exercises to reduce the symptoms of piriformis and help muscles to heal.
Glute Medius Tendinopathy
What is it? A moderate to severe disabling pain over the greater lateral hip.
What is it caused by? It is caused by inflammation in the tendons of the gluteus medius muscle.
What are the symptoms? Stiffness, pain and strength loss in the hip and surrounding areas.
How do I manage it? Specific muscle activation, strengthening and hip mobility exercises.
Bursitis
What is it? A bursa becomes inflamed and swollen.
What is it caused by? Injury or overuse. Infection. Arthritis, gout, tendonitis, diabetes and thyroid disease.
What are the symptoms? Sudden inability to move a joint. Swelling, redness, bruising or a rash in the affected area.
How do I manage it? Rest and applying ice to the affected area.
Hamstring Tear
What is it? A strain or tear to the tendons or large muscles at the back of the thigh.
What is it caused by? It occurs when the tendons or muscles are stretched beyond their limit.
What are the symptoms? Sudden, sharp pain. Tenderness, swelling, bruising, partial or complete weakness.
How do I manage it? Rest, compression, applying ice and elevation. Gentle exercises and strengthening exercises to restore muscle.
